IUD & Implanon in Armstrong Creek
Long-Acting Contraception, Explained Simply
Not every woman wants to think about contraception every single day. If you are looking for a highly effective, low-maintenance option that works quietly in the background of your life, long-acting contraception could be right for you.
At Armstrong Creek Doctors, our female GPs provide clear, personalised advice on IUDs and Implanon, helping you understand your options and make the choice that genuinely fits your life.
What Is an IUD?
An IUD (intrauterine device) is a small device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is one of the most effective forms of contraception available, and once in place, you do not have to do anything daily, weekly, or monthly.
There are two main types:
Hormonal IUD — e.g. Mirena
A hormonal IUD releases a very low dose of progestogen locally to prevent pregnancy. Beyond contraception, it may also help manage heavy or painful periods for some women, making it a popular choice for those managing both.
Depending on the brand, a hormonal IUD can be effective for up to five years.
Copper IUD — Hormone-Free Protection
The copper IUD works without hormones, making it a suitable option for women who prefer to avoid hormonal contraception altogether. It uses copper to create an environment that prevents fertilisation and can remain effective for up to ten years.
A copper IUD can also be used as emergency contraception when inserted within a short window after unprotected sex. Speak with your GP as soon as possible if this applies to you.
What Is Implanon?
Implanon (also known as the contraceptive implant or Nexplanon) is a small, flexible rod, about the size of a matchstick, inserted just under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a low, steady dose of progestogen to prevent pregnancy for up to three years.
Once inserted, it is invisible and requires no daily attention. Clinical studies show it is one of the most effective contraceptive methods available, with high rates of effectiveness under typical conditions of use.
How Do I Know Which One Is Right for Me?
This is exactly the kind of conversation our female GPs are here for. There is no universal right answer, the best option depends on your:
- Medical history and any existing health conditions
- Whether you prefer hormonal or non-hormonal contraception
- Your lifestyle and how long you want contraception to last
- Whether you are planning a pregnancy in the near future
- Your experience with contraception so far
Our GPs will take the time to understand your situation fully and walk you through each option clearly, with no pressure and no assumptions.
Is Long-Acting Contraception Reversible?
Both the IUD and Implanon are designed to be reversible. For many women, fertility may return relatively quickly after removal, though this can vary from person to person. Your GP can discuss what to expect based on your individual circumstances.
Fees & Bulk Billing
Armstrong Creek Doctors is a fully bulk billing clinic. Contraception consultations, IUD insertions, and Implanon insertions are bulk billed for all eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.
