Child Developmental Assessments in Armstrong Creek — Giving Every Child the Best Start
Every child grows, learns, and develops in their own way. But sometimes, a little extra support at the right time may open up important pathways for a child’s development.
At Armstrong Creek Doctors, our caring GPs provide child developmental assessments to identify areas where a child may benefit from additional support, and to connect families with the right services, early.
Why Early Support Matters
The early years of a child’s life are the most critical for development. When concerns are identified early, children may have greater access to support, resources, and pathways suited to their individual needs.
Our GPs understand how important it is to act early. We are here to listen to your concerns and assess your child as thoroughly as possible.
What Does a Child Developmental Assessment Involve
A developmental assessment is a comprehensive review of your child’s growth and progress across the key areas of development:
Speech & Language
How your child communicates, understands language, and expresses themselves, including both verbal and non-verbal communication.
Motor Skills
Both fine motor skills (such as holding a pencil or doing up buttons) and gross motor skills (such as running, jumping, and balance) are reviewed to ensure physical development is on track.
Social & Emotional Development
How your child interacts with others, manages emotions, builds relationships, and responds to their environment.
Learning & Cognitive Abilities
How your child processes information, follows instructions, solves problems, and engages with learning.
Behaviour & Attention
Patterns of behaviour and attention that may be affecting your child’s ability to engage at home, in childcare, or at school.
When Should I Consider a Developmental Assessment?
You know your child better than anyone. If something feels off, it is always worth raising with your GP. Some signs that a developmental assessment may be helpful include:
- Your child does not appear to be meeting milestones for their age
- Difficulty with speech, communication, or being understood
- Challenges connecting with other children or adults socially
- Behavioural concerns at home, in childcare, or at school
- A teacher or early childhood educator has raised concerns
- Your child has a known condition and needs ongoing developmental review
There is no such thing as raising a concern too early. Our GPs are here to listen and will take your observations seriously.
What Happens After the Assessment?
Your GP will discuss the findings with you in full — clearly, honestly, and without jargon. Where further support is needed, we will coordinate referrals to the right specialists and allied health professionals for your child’s specific needs.
Your child may also be eligible for a GP Management Plan, which can support subsidised access to services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and psychology through Medicare.
We aim to support families throughout this process so you do not have to navigate the system on your own.
A Note for Parents
It can feel daunting to seek a developmental assessment. Some parents worry about what it might mean, or feel uncertain whether their concern is serious enough to act on.
Our message is simple: if you have a concern, come and talk to us. Early conversations lead to early support. And early support can make a real difference.
Fees & Bulk Billing
Armstrong Creek Doctors is a fully bulk billing clinic. All child developmental assessment consultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card, at no out-of-pocket cost.
